Goalkeepers Are Voodoo: The 2014/15 Edition

Right, before we get stuck in, a key:

- Save% = 100-goals against/shots on target against
- GSAA (Goals Saved Above Average) =  SoT Against * League Average Scoring% - Actual Goals Against
- GSAA p90

Goals Saved Above Average sounds like a tricky little thing to calculate or understand but it's actually quite simple: how many goals did Goalkeeper X prevent above/below replacement level. If we convert that metric into a per90 we get a decent rate stat. Small samples always skew evaluations so make sure to check the number of games each goalkeeper played in.

Poor Rob Green shipped the most goals against and faced the most shots on target against.

Best full-time save%? David Ospina with 81% in 18 games. That 81% number is almost 5 percentage points higher than anyone else in the league. Does anyone believe David Ospina is that good? ....
....
.....
....
....

Thought not.

Costel Pantillimon is yet another Sunderland goalkeeper to lead the league in this stat. Weird things going on at Sunderland with goalkeepers (probably deep set D, good midfield block due to an inability to keep the fucking ball, win the territory battle etc..)

David Ospina shows up again leading the league in Goals Saved Above Average p90 for full-time players.

Goalkeepers are voodoo, we struggle to evaluate them. Guys we think are good may indeed be actually good in that given season, but we have no true and trustworthy way of saying how good they will be next year.

Search for Brad Jones.....please.

Expected v Actual: Conversion Percentages

So, I used Michael Caley's expected goal page and calculated expected shooting%, expected save% and expected PDO. Those calculated percentages can be found in the table below alongside dumb 'ol shooting%, save%, and broad PDO.

Data

Plonking the actual conversion metric and the relevant expected  metric into a scatter plot churned out some interesting results.

Actual Sh% v Expected Sh% r2=0.342
Actual Sv% v Expected Sv% r2=0.290
Actual Broad PDO v Expected PDO r2=0.406

I don't really have an opinion on those r2 scores. It would take a person with more emotional investment in private expected goal models to tell us if those correlations are disappointing or not.

One weird thing I did notice when running those numbers at week 38: the sh% & PDO correlations are almost twice as strong now as they were just 3 weeks ago at week 35.

Strange, eh. Anyway, the data, as always, is shared below. Kick it around, play with it, bend it break it.

Chelsea's Cyborgs: Player Usage Chart

All the way back on the 20th January of this fine year I wrote about Chelsea and cyborgs. Each week Mourinho was running a bunch of players who looked like this:

Those guys could run forever, couldn't get injured and they wouldn't lose. Machines. It's no surprise then that this Chelsea team walked the title with plenty of games to spare.

The player usage chart below is an attempt at visualizing just how heavily Mourinho leaned on his core players.

The further right on the chart, the more starts made. The bigger the bubble, the higher the % of minutes played.

Full Screen

Chelsea had FOUR players play over 90% of the minutes available in the Premier League: Hazard, Matic, Terry, and Ivanovic. It's incredible that  Chelsea were able to run those crucially important players so much without them breaking down, or wearing down, or giving up.

But the heavy usage doesn't end there.

  • Cahill and Fabregas played over 80% of the available minutes.
  • Willian and Azpilicueta over 70% of the available minutes.
  • Costa and Oscar rounded out the first 11 with around 60% of the minutes played.
The 10 names you read above are Chelsea's complete outfield team and those names can all be found on the right hand side of the chart above. There was little rotation from Mourinho, Chelsea suffered the lowest number of man games lost to injury by a significant and almost unbelievable margin and that meant there was little need to use the inferior squad players like Cudrado, Remy, Luis, or Mikel.

Chelsea's squad players are fine pros one and all but the gap in talent from the squad players to the cyborg starters is significant, as it is with many other clubs. But Chelsea were never in a position where they had to use their squad players for anything other than garbage time, to cover the odd suspension or fill in for Costa's hamstrings.

I don't know if Chelsea has a unique training and recovery program in 14/15 that prevented fatigue and injury, or whether it was blind dumb luck (last season only Ivanovic, Terry and Hazard played over 80% of the available minutes and the squad players were generally more involved). It is what it is and Chelsea benefited greatly from it this year during their title winning campaign.

But will that skill/luck sustain next season? Will the cyborgs be just as unbreakable?

The Enlightened Era (2009 - 2015): Shots On Target For/Against

Another interactive chart, this time one that shows the importance of shots on target on both sides of the ball.

Notice the cluster of teams in the bottom right of this chart. These are the teams that post very good shots on target numbers in both attack and defense. These teams, as you can see by the bubble colour, are the teams that frequently populate the top 4 in the Premier League.

Getting your shots on target is pretty damn important.

- Size of the bubble indicates points won.
- The further right a team is on the chart, the higher the shots for per game.
- The lower a team is on the chart, the lower the shots against per game

The Enlightened Era (2009 - 2015): Scoring%, Save% & PDO

Another Interactive chart that shows Scoring% (goals for/shots on target for) and Save% (100- goals against/shots on target against)

We see a group of bubbles clustered around the top right of the chart (good scoring% & save%). Those bubbles in the sweet spot of this chart are more or less made up of just 3 teams: Man City, Man United & Chelsea. Are the 'Big 3' consistently lucky? Or do these 3 clubs have such superior talent on their squads that are consistently able to post both high scoring and save percentages?

In a league without a salary cap and a wide spread of budgets it is likely that we see some form of talent skew throughout the table.

The Enlightened Era (2009 - 2015): Shots For/Against

An interactive chart that gives us a quick and dirty understanding of the importance of shots counts both for and against.

Score effects, finishing skill, ability to prevent high quality chances against are still a thing but shot volume, over the course of a full season, is, was, and will continue to be very important.

- Size of the bubble indicates points won.
- The further right a team is on the chart, the higher the shots for per game.
- The lower a team is on the chart, the lower the shots against per game.
